Minor event at Wolf Creek

Monday, October 26, 2009

Plant operators declared a Notification of Unusual Event (NUE) Thursday evening at Wolf Creek Generation Station north of Burlington.

According to information from Jenny Hageman, communication specialist for Wolf Creek, an NUE indicates an unusual event is in progress or has occurred that may indicate a potential decrease in plant safety levels.

“Conditions prompting an NUE are often small changes in normal operating practices and do not require action by the public,” Hageman said.

Wolf Creek personnel notified appropriate officials at Coffey County, the State of Kansas, and at the national level.

Both of the plant’s back-up emergency diesel generators involved in the NUE were out of service during the plant’s scheduled maintenance and refueling outage.

“One of the diesel generators has been out of service for several days for routine maintenance and the other was removed from service (Friday) to troubleshoot a defective switch,” Hageman said in the release. “Maintenance personnel determined the defective switch was a result of a faulty power supply, which has been replaced.”

The diesel generator was returned to service Friday morning, and the NUE was ended.
