Emporia State beats Truman in OT

Saturday, October 24, 2009

A clutch field goal by Dustin Andrews got Emporia State into overtime, and Kevin Smart finished off a huge game with a five-yard touchdown run to give the Hornets a 30-24 OT win over Truman State on Saturday in Kirksville, Mo.

Andrews hit a 26-yard field goal with 17 seconds remaining in regulation to even the score at 24. On the first possession of overtime, ESU's Chris Woods picked off a pass to get the ball in the hands of the Hornet offense. Smart, who finished with 206 yards on 30 carries, ended the game with three straight rushes for 14 yards. Sheldon Smith ended the game at QB for Emporia State; he had replaced the already-injured Tyler Eckenrode at quarterback after Eckenrode came on to replace an injured Andre Sloan El. Smith's 10-yard run in OT put the Hornets at the Truman 14, setting up Smart's last three runs.

The Hornets (2-7, 1-6 MIAA) finished with 515 total yards, including 375 on the ground. Julian Dozier, Matt Rosenhamer and Chris Woods each picked off passes for ESU. Truman fell to 1-8 and 0-7 in conference.

Remember the win was against Truman - another bottom feeder of the MIAA. Upcoming games vs. Western & Washburn should restate the need to replace the coaching staff.
