Pats on the Back

Friday, October 23, 2009

EDITOR’S NOTE: Each Friday, The Gazette salutes those who make Emporia and the surrounding area a better place to live and work. The following folks deserve a pat on the back ...

Emporia High School senior Katherine Stuchlik, who has been named a Commended Student in the 2010 National Merit program. She is among about 34,000 Commended Students nationwide being recognized for academic promise. The commendation is based on outstanding performance on the preliminary SAT/National Merit Qualifying Test administered in 2008.

• Northern Heights sophomore Kimberly Smith, who won the Flint Hills League cross country meet a week ago, beating Mission Valley’s Jamie Singleton to the finish line by more than a minute. Smith clocked a time of 16 minutes, 51.28 seconds. Kimberly’s finish helped the Northern Heights girls cross country team take the league crown; the Heights boys finished second in league.

• Members of the Flint Hills Antique Power Association, who have been displaying a 1940s-era Allis-Chalmers tractor painted pink as a reminder that October is Cancer Awareness Month. The tractor has taken part in parades, fairs and special events in Lyon and surrounding counties to promote cancer awareness and raise funds for the JuneBug Foundation to help people undergoing treatment for cancer.

• Members of the Emporia High football team, who defeated Topeka West 46-14 in last Friday’s game, the first round of district play. Junior quarterback Brandon Gentz racked up 100 rushing yards and three touchdowns in the first half of the game.

• Youth members of the Twelfth Avenue Baptist Church, who will be sleeping in boxes on the night of Oct. 30 to raise money to benefit people in need. Money raised during the event will go to purchase food for the Salvation Army food pantry.

• The Emporia High girls golf team, who ended its season this year by reaching its goal of finishing in the top 10 at the State tournament last week. The Spartans shot a 446 at the Class 5a tournament at Brookridge Country Club in Overland Park, finishing in ninth place out of 12 teams.

• ESU freshman Katelyn Schmidtberger, who has moved from setter to outside hitter for the volleyball team, where she has started in the last 10 games. Schmidtberger has been consistent in her new spot, finishing with more than seven kills in seven of those starts.
