Hallelujah Night

The Church of the New Covenant, 2300 E. Sixth Ave., is inviting families to participate in “Hallelujah Night” from 6 to 8 p.m. Oct. 31. They are offering children an alternative to other activities that take place on that night, stated the news release. There will be fun and festivities, along with lessons from the Bible. Costumes are welcome, as long as they “are not gross, bloody, demonic or revealing.” There also will be activities for the parents. For more information, call 343-0032.

Boo in the Zoo

“Boo in the Zoo” at Soden’s Grove will be held from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Oct. 31. The Sertoma Club will offer a “Haunted Train” ride on the miniature train.

AARP driver safety classes

AARP driver safety classes are scheduled for the area from 10 a.m. to noon and 1 to 3 p.m. on Nov. 12 and 13 at the Burlington Recreation Center. This will make up the eight-hour course required for certification and to receive a discount on automobile insurance premiums. The fee for the class for AARP members is $12 and $14 for others. Participants are to bring their membership cards. Bill Winter of Burlington will be the instructor.

According to the news release, course participation sharpens one’s driving skills and (helps) develop strategies for adjusting to age-related changes in vision, hearing and learning how to handle the challenges of today’s road, including how to deal with aggressive driving.

Upon completion of the eight hour course, Kansas law requires all automobile insurance carriers to offer a discount on premiums to qualified drivers. No test will be given and one must attend both day classes to graduate.

To register for the class and information, call Bill Winter at (620) 364-2401 or the Recreation Center at (620) 364-8484.

Free veterans breakfast

The Emporia Presbyterian Manor invites area veterans to a free breakfast at 7:15 a.m. on Nov. 11, Veterans Day. The breakfast is free to area veterans, their spouses and widows, but they must call in and reserve by Nov. 9. Reservations can be made by calling 343-2613. This year’s speaker will be Wade Vlosich, assistant director of VA Eastern Kansas Health Care System.
