Youth fun run

The annual Emporia Area Youth Fun Run will be held in Jones Park on Tuesday, Oct. 27, starting at 4:30 p.m. The primary purpose of the run is to promote running and exercise for youth. This year the run is hosted by Emporia State University Cross Country and Emporia State Coaching Education, as well as the Lowther Intermediate 5th-6th grade Run For Something Better program.

The run is a culmination of the 5th-6th grade Run For Something Better eight-week program, which was part of an ING-NASPE grant. Runners can sign up the day of the race.

Junior Spartan

Basketball

There will be an organizational and informational meeting for anyone interested in having their son participate in the Emporia Boys Junior Spartan Basketball program on Nov. 3rd at 6:30 pm in the Emporia High School gymnasium. All boys third through eighth grade are invited to play, regardless of experience. Questions and concerns can be answered that evening, along with discussion of schedule, practices, philosophy, etc. Any questions, contact coach Rick Bloomquist at 343-5102 or email at rick.bloomquist@usd253.org.

Emporia Kids

Wrestling

The Emporia Kids Wrestling Club will be hosting a free wrestling clinic on November 11 and 12 at Emporia High School from 6:15 to 7:30 p.m. This in an introductory clinic for children that are interested in wrestling. Children must have been 5 years or older on September 1, 2009 to participate. Please wear a T-shirt and shorts for the clinic. There will be a presentation about the club for the parents at the same time as the clinic. Gymnastics

The Lee Beran Recreation Center is offering gymnastics for ages 5-12, beginning Nov. 7. The fee for residents is $18 and $20 for non-residents. The registration deadline is Nov. 6.

The ERC also has a tumbling tots program for ages 3-5. The fee for residents is $16 and $18 for non-residents.

Free sports

injury clinics

Newman Orthopedics & Sports Medicine, 1301 W. 12th Ave. Suite 105, is hosting free clinics on Saturdays for any sports injury area athletes sustain during the current sports season. The clinics run through Saturday, beginning at 10 a.m. each Saturday. All athletes must arrive at 10:30 a.m. in order to be examined, and will be seen on a first-come, first-serve basis.

The screenings will not carry a charge, but if any diagnostic tests such as radiology services need to be performed, those will carry a charge. If a problem is detected, an appointment will be scheduled for the athlete to be seen during regular office hours. Children under 18 must be accompanied by a parent.

The Emporia Recreation Commission is offering a youth soccer league for grades 3-6. The fee is $25 for residents and $27 for non residents. Practice begins Nov. 2. The deadline to register is Friday.
