H1N1 was one of the topics Lyon County commissioners tackled during their study session on Wednesday at the Lyon County Courthouse.
Carrie Boettcher, emergency preparedness coordinator for the Lyon County Health Department, discussed Phase 3 funding for the H1N1 influenza response. The funding, which is federal money dispersed through the Kansas Department of Health and Environment, is to cover costs associated with the vaccination of people against H1N1. The money covers expenses for personnel, hiring contract nurses and vaccination clinics.
Right now, the vaccine is only being offered to select groups because of its limited availability but it is anticipated that more shipments will arrive and the general public can be vaccinated. The public will be notified through media and the health department’s Web site when vaccine becomes available and who will be eligible to receive the vaccine.
The health department continues to receive numerous phone calls from the public about H1N1, said Liz Conrade, executive director of the Flint Hills Community Health Center/Lyon County Health Department.
Conrade said the health department is considering setting up a dedicated phone line to field H1N1-related calls and designating one person to answer the phone.
Conrade and Boettcher also discussed changes to the local and regional 2009-2010 work plans for the East Central Kansas Public Health Coalition. The coalition is shifting work plans to put more focus on H1N1 response.
In other business:
• Commissioners talked with Bev Hilbish of Court Services to consider a request to review and sign the three-year lease agreement with State Parole.
• Commissioners spoke with Capt. Brian Anstey, Lyon County Jail administrator, about floor covering in the booking and work release areas in the jail.
