The design for personalized vehicle plates will change in 2010 and Kansas law requires all personalized plate holders to reorder new plates. The division of vehicles, Kansas Department of Revenue (KDOR), will begin accepting reorders for the new 2010-2015 personalized license plate on Nov. 2, 2009. The new personalized plate can only be picked up during the vehicle owner’s renewal month in the year of 2010.
Beginning next week, 55,432 letters will be mailed to individuals able to retain their current plate combination. Individuals should order plates when the letters are received.
Statute (HB 2134) requires that plate combinations are now required to be unique. This means there can be only one of any specific combination within the state, according to the news release. Because of the change, KDOR will mail 31,600 letters to individuals who will not be allowed to retain their current combination. Since they are not the first owner of their current combination, they must select a new unique combination.
KDOR is in the process of putting on their website the ability for individuals to type in a requested plate combination that will tell them immediately if it is available or not.
In the past, owners received two personalized plates to display on their vehicle. As a cost savings measure, KDOR will issue one personalized plate. State law just requires one plate for each vehicle (displayed on rear bumper).

Isn't that sweet, in the past for $44 I got 2 personalized tags, now if I want it I'll have to pay $46 and I'll get just one...common sense tells me now I would have to pay half the cost for one tag not $2 more...

Not only are they telling me I have to pay more for it....they are also telling me I can't keep the one they approved for me because they had approved it for somebody else first. So, in my case, the state has just lost forty six dollars in revenue.....but they have gained the opportunity to kiss my plate. Do you get my drift.

I don't know Steve....I could submit them and see.....and I thank you for trying. But that begs the question....because whether they are available or not...they are not his name. And I think this is a major point the state is failing to understand. To some, what is on these plates has a deeper emotional value than some cutesy little phrase. And to those people choosing another "unique combination" is about as helpful as pouring gasoline on a fire.

Another unnecessary revenue loss by the State of Kansas. We have held a personalized plate for the last 20 yrs. About three weeks after we promptly renewed our tag, we received the notification that we would have to give it up next year. Please, tell us before, because if our money isn't good enough next year for this special tag, it should not have been good enough this year. So, please, all the rest of you 31,600 personalized plate holders who are losing your personalized plate, for whatever reason the State of Kansas has decided - jump in and voice your opinion. Oh, and by the way - at $46 per plate - you're talking $1,453,600 in lost revenue per year. WHY?

Is the state really so stupid that it failed to recognize that what is on these plates is important to many of the people that have them. They act like a "unique combination" is the only thing that is important to us. Well...if all I care about is a unique combination I can get that with a regular plate.
In my opinion, the state....for reason known only to its self....is trying to greatly reduce the number of these plates. I for one will be happy to help them lose one and a half million dollars in revenue.
