Haunted House

Ghouls and spooks will be out in Neosho Rapids starting this weekend for the 16th annual Neosho Rapids Haunted House.

The event features a concession stand, a hayrack ride to the haunted house, a haunted maze and a tour of the haunted house. Along the way, visitors can expect several spooky surprises.

Dorothy Dunn, one of the organizers of the haunted house each year, said the house is changed each year to make it fresh for visitors.

“We try to change that every year and do something different,” Dunn said. “We try to change the route a little bit too.”

It takes a lot of volunteers and a lot of planning to put on the event each year, Dunn added.

“We couldn’t do it without the community’s help,” she said. “It takes a lot of bodies and a lot to prepare for it too and then the cleanup afterwards.”

Proceeds from the haunted house benefit the community. Scholarships are given to seniors, proceeds are given to help support seeing eye dogs, glasses are collected and donated to foreign countries who don’t have supplies, park improvements in Neosho Rapids are made with the most recent improvements being to the ball field, school books are bought for children, support has been given for the fire siren and money is donated for collections being done for people with medical conditions.

“We give to different things like that to help with the community,” Dunn said. “It all goes back into the community. Very little is kept in our funds. Just what we need to pay our bills. The rest goes back into our community.”

The haunted house will operate Friday and Saturday and Oct. 30 and 31. Tickets and concessions may be purchased from 6 to 11 p.m. Hayrack rides to the haunted house start at dusk.

Tickets for the haunted house cost $7 with $1 off with a canned food donation. Concessions will be sold by Rinker 4-H Club members at the community building. The event is sponsored by the Neosho Rapids Lions Club, City of Neosho Rapids Community Projects and Lyon County Fire District No. 5.

To reach the haunted house from Emporia, drive to Exit 141 on Interstate Highway 35, go south three miles, cross the railroad tracks, then turn right on Sixth Street. Continue west to the stop sign on Main Street, turn left and drive two blocks to the community center.

And in Waverly

The barn of Winding Road Equine Rescue and Retirement, 1651 Old Highway 50, Waverly, will be transformed into a spook-fest on Oct. 30 welcoming trick or treaters into barn.

Kristin Chambers, founder of Winding Road, said the event will start at 4 p.m. Oct. 30. The 11 stalls in the barn will be stations for Halloween candy to be handed out. A horse dressed in costume will be in each stall, Chambers said. There will be pony rides and cart rides as well.

Donations are suggested for the event, but not mandatory. Donations are tax deductible and will go directly to the care of the horses. Donations of feed and hay also will be accepted. The rescue uses Purina Equine Junior, Purina Equine Senior, Purina Strategy, horse blankets of all sizes and horse de-wormer.

Also during the evening, there will be karaoke by Just Sing Karaoke in Emporia. Volunteers are still needed for the event to hand out candy, help with parking and get the horses ready.

For more information on the event contact Chambers at (785) 733-2640 or (620) 794-7019.
