Getting ready for auction

Wednesday, October 21, 2009

Staffers at the National Teachers Hall of Fame are gearing up for the 18th annual fundraising auction, and this year proves to be different from years past.

This year’s auction will be held Nov. 19 at the new Emporia State Federal Credit Union on Industrial Road and 24th Avenue. The auction also will be broadcast live on KVOE and CableOne.

“We invite the public to come out and look at the items and watch live or they can stay home” and participate in the auction there, said Jenny Harder, the organization’s director of induction and recognition.

The list of auction items is still being put together, Harder said.

“There’s some sports memorabilia, some jewelry, the dinners we’ve had before and some local artists’ work” so far, she said.

The complete list will be available the week of the auction, as donations continue right up to the auction’s date.

The auction is scheduled to run from 6:05 to 10 p.m., but Harder said that could go long or short, depending on the number of items and the evening’s progress.

The annual auctions traditionally have been a successful way for the hall of fame to raise money. The funds will go to pay for the organization’s recognition programs and educational programs.

“We realize the economy is down from what it has been in the past, but hopefully we can still make a nice event out of it,” Harder said. “People have been really generous even though times are tougher.”
