Emporia High’s girls golf team, including its five seniors, ended its season by reaching its goal of finishing in the top 10 at the State tournament.
The Spartans shot a 446 on Monday at the Class 5A tournament at Brookridge Country Club in Overland Park, good for a ninth-place finish out of 12 teams. In last year’s State trip, the Spartans’ first in 18 years, Emporia finished in 11th place at Salina.
“I’m really proud of the fact that they worked hard enough to get back to State,” EHS coach Rick Eckert said of his seniors. “And then this year, it might sound like kind of a simplistic goal, but our goal was to get inside the top 10 this year, and we did that. They were very focused on doing that. I’m really happy for them that they accomplished that goal, because it’s a huge (milestone) for them, and they were very deserving of that.”
Hannah Watkins led EHS, shooting a 105. Makenzie Harder fired a 110, and Melissa Heinitz shot a 114. Freshman Amber Mechtley, the only non-senior on the squad, shot a 117, Rachael Clopton had a 120 and Kelsey Burenheide shot a 129.
