Emporia State senior guard Jarvis Nichols is out for the season because of a torn anterior cruciate ligament and his college career could be over if the NCAA does not grant him more eligibility.
If this story sounds familiar, it’s because Nichols tore his ACL during the summer of 2008 on the same left knee and had to miss all of last season.
“It’s rare to happen again, but it does happen,” Nichols said. “It was just a freak accident, because typically it doesn’t happen.”
Nichols, who transferred from Northern Illinois during the summer of 2008, rehabbed and went to school part-time last year to keep his eligibility intact for the 2009-10 season. He had already used up his redshirt season in 2006-07 at Northern Illinois and will run out of eligibility after this school year; however, the ESU coaches are attempting to request the NCAA to clear Nichols to play in 2010-11.
Nichols injured his knee on Thursday during Emporia State’s first official practice of the season. Nichols stole the ball and went in for a layup and landed awkwardly, tearing his ACL and partially tearing his medial collateral ligament.
