Lebo stays perfect with win

Saturday, October 17, 2009

Lebo stayed undefeated Friday night at Hartford, beating the Jaguars 34-12.

Cole Brockelman ran for 155 yards and three touchdowns to help his team move to 7-0. Brockelman got rolling in the first quarter with a 34-yard touchdown and never slowed down. Calvin Perry helped out with 80 rushing yards of his own to keep Hartford guessing, including a 47-yard run and a 16-yard TD.

Lebos’ defense came up big when it mattered, standing tall with Hartford inside the Wolves’ 20 on three separate occasions. Lebo coach Butch Jones said safety Brent Gould was one player in particular who came up big.

“Our defense has been big all year,” Jones said.

“I thought our boys played tough and we had some opportunities,” Hartford coach Patrick Gardner said. “Unfortunately, you can’t make too many mistakes against an undefeated team like Lebo.”

Madison 31, Crest 8

Madison scored 22 points in the fourth quarter to finish off Crest.

In a low-scoring first half, Madison stayed composed and in control never giving Crest a chance to get back in the game. Madison’s defense gathered three interceptions when Crest got inside the Madison 5-yard line.

“If we hadn’t have gotten those big stops deep in our own territory, this could have been a whole different ball game,” Madison assistant coach Tracy Griffin said.

Junior Zach Fox had a big game receiving, with 5 catches for 96 yards. His night was highlighted by a 40-yard reception that gave Madison momentum as they broke down the Crest defense. Fox would later add an 18-yard run for his second of two touchdowns in the fourth quarter.

“Crest had a tough a line on both sides of the ball and came at us hard in the first half with nonstop blitzing,” Griffin said. “We were able to adapt in the second half, keeping their rush at bay and get our offense moving.”

Chase County 42, Peabody-Burns 0

With Chase County players out with illness, the Bulldogs were still able to get an easy victory.

“We talked to our kids about it being a blessing dealing with adversity,” said Chase County coach Derick Budke. “We were going to need a big performance from our remaining starters to keep the season moving in the right direction. Our young guys did well. You know they’re doing fine when you don’t notice them on the field.”

Jesse Cole had 106 yards rushing and one touchdown to lead Chase County, and Johnny Lang had 97 yards.
