The Emporia State cross country teams both finished second at the Ollie Isom Invitational in El Dorado on Friday afternoon. The men finished second to Garden City Community College, the third-ranked team in the latest NJCAA National Poll. The women were second to Kansas Wesleyan, which is receiving votes in the NAIA National Poll.
“We felt like running in this competition would give us some good speed work going into the MIAA championships,” said ESU head coach Dave Harris. “In some ways it felt like a track race, since it was a circular course we went over a few times.”
For the second straight meet, Adam McGovern led the ESU men. He placed fifth overall with a time of 15:29 on the five-kilometer course. Will Hohmeier finished ninth with a time of 15:40 and Skyler Delmott was 11th at 15:47.
Katie Mona was third overall to lead the ESU women with a time of 14:33 over the four-kilometer course.
“This was a good tune-up for the MIAA Championships,” said Harris. “We’re looking forward to going out next week and competing hard for a championship on our home course.”
ESU will be the host for the MIAA Cross Country Championships on Oct. 24 at Jones Park. The women’s race will begin at 10:30 a.m., with the men to follow at approximately 11:15 a.m.
