The Emporia High girls tennis team’s season came to an end Friday after its State-qualifying doubles team went 1-1 at the State meet in Wichita.
Kaitlin Gile and Brooke Gutierrez opened with a match against Carmen and Johanna Ramirez of Andover Central, losing 6-0, 6-1. The Ramirezes entered State with a record of 25-7.
The meet’s format stated that Gile and Gutierrez, after losing their opener, would play just one more match whether they won or lost. But the pair rebounded to defeat Emily Randolph and Breanna Tendick of Bonner Springs by a 9-2 score. Randolph/Tendick were 9-10 entering the meet.
Gile and Gutierrez, both juniors, finished their season with a record of 12-17. The State meet continues today.
