Bowling party

All girls in grades 4 through 12 are invited to a Bowling Lock-in Party at 7 p.m. Oct. 24 until 7 a.m. Oct. 25 at Flint Hills Lanes, 1519 W. Sixth Ave. Hosts are the Girl Scouts. All current Girl Scouts must bring a non-registered Girl Scout friend to the event.

Along with bowling, there will be ice cream, music and movies. The cost is $17 for registered Girl Scouts; $5 for adults; $19.50 for non-registered girls. This fee includes a $12 Girl Scout membership fee that is good through September 2010 and allows girls the opportunity to attend any Girl Scout activity.

Registration deadline is by 5 p.m Friday. If paying with cookie credits, the deadline is 5 p.m. Tuesday. To register, call Angela Cheever, Linda Jones or Elyse Birdson at 342-4532 or (800) 342-4532 or register at the office at 1200 Burlingame Road.

Community workshop

Emporia State University and Flint Hills Technical College will jointly sponsor the “Sustainable Communities Workshop” from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 24. This workshop is for a time of learning and discussion about various aspects of community building in a sustainable way, stated the news release. Participants will learn what is being done in this community and “be a part of the continuing direction of building Emporia as sustainable community.”

The keynote speaker will be Daniel Wallach, founder and director of Greensburg Greentown. Wallach has been instrumental in “developing the vision of rebuilding tornado-ravaged Greensburg as the ‘Greenest Town in America.’” He is currently writing a book, “Greentown USA,” scheduled for release this winter.

The workshop is free and open to all in the Emporia area. Lunch will be provided. Those who wish to attend are to RSVP to Amy Becker at 341-1392 or FHTC at 343-4600, or e-mail: abecker@fhtc.edu or Ellen Hansen at ehansen@emporia.edu or 341-5576.
