Village fetes retired teachers

Friday, October 16, 2009

Eleven retired teachers returned to Village Elementary School last week to see what changes are taking place in the classroom and to help their colleagues celebrate World Teacher Day.

Village teachers have traditionally invited retired teachers for lunch at the end of a school year as a way of keeping in touch. Teacher Colleen Mitchell said it was decided to move the event to the fall.

“We tagged on to World Teacher Day because we are a diverse school who believes that teachers are important to the development of our students and they may not just be on staff at our school,” she said.

Guests included Mary Pool, Velma Rayl, Gloria Hastings, Chris Warner, Bev Dillman, Karen Moorman, Sharon Stewart, Joyce Barr, Linda Whitney, Shelley Craig and Shirley Langley.

Fourth-grade students led tours of the school’s new addition and talked about changes in the school’s demographics, current instructional programs and the new electronic white boards. The Village PTO provided lunch for the event.

World Teachers’ Day is an annual observance held on Oct. 5. It was created in 1994 by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to celebrate teachers worldwide.
