Northern Heights’ Kimberly Smith commandingly won the Flint Hills League cross country crown on Thursday at Council Grove, beating Mission Valley’s Jamie Singleton to the finish line by more than a minute.
The Heights sophomore clocked a time of 16 minutes, 51.28 seconds in the 4K race, beating Singleton’s time of 17:53.39. With Ashley Heston and Savanna Chestnut also placing in the top five, the Heights girls won the team cross country crown over Council Grove and Mission Valley. Heston finished third with a time of 17:57.75, and Chestnut was fourth at 18:01.09. Elizabeth Karr finished in eighth place for Heights, clocking an 18:38.64, Chelsea Carr finished 16th at 19:30.19 and Shannon Sprigler was 32nd with a time of 27:23.47. Heights scored 27 team points, beating Council Grove’s 56 and Mission Valley’s 64.
On the boys side, Justin Heston led the way for Heights with a fifth-place finish, running the 5K course in 17:50.68. Right behind him in sixth was Brian Hultgren, who finished in 17:55.75. Jon Lowder finished eighth with a time of 18:19.24. Also competing for the Wildcats were Dalton Rhoads, who finished 11th at 19:07.11; Matthew Parks, who ran 16th with a time of 19:47.27; and Michael Hawthorne, who finished 26th with a time of 21:45.70.
Osage City, which had the FHL’s top three boys runners, won the team title with 20 points. Heights was second with 38, and Council Grove was third with 75. Osage’s Richard Woodward won the individual crown with a time of 16:46.38.
