Pumpkin Fun

Roga Pumpkin Patch, west of Emporia on U.S. Highway 50, is a fall paradise filled with 10 acres of pumpkins ripe for the picking.
The patch is in its 13th year. Owner Ron Nurnberg said it started 13 years ago as a way to reach out to kids.
“Really, we just wanted to have a place for kids to see crops that would grow, and then we decided to do pumpkins with it,” he said. “Most people don’t have relatives on the farm anymore. They don’t really have a place to get out of town.”
This year’s pumpkin patch boasts 20 varieties of pumpkins up to about 130 and 140 pounds — and every size in between. Nurnberg said this year’s largest pumpkin is 147 pounds.
