IN REGARD TO the Page 1 article, Extension District Proposal — 09-24-2009
Emporia bills itself as the “Front Porch of the Flint Hills” and when you open that front door, you are in the Chase County majestic Flint Hills. You will find that Highway 50 runs both ways.
Surely, Commissioner Rollie Martin jests when he wonders “but how many people from Chase County come here and spend money?” Let me count the ways! We do not have a Town Crier bookstore, Walmart, pharmacy, optometrist, dentist, Emporia State University, the technical school and uncounted others.
What we do have is the unspoiled Flint Hills, as they do not lend their make-up to easy development. A beautiful courthouse with an amazing history, the Tallgrass National Park that just keeps getting better. I know that a lot of Lyon County folks already know all of that.
Rural libraries have prospered because of an umbrella that allows them to flourish.
Lyon and Chase counties could be a powerhouse if they would join forces. But that is so hard to do.

Yes Chase county has all of that, and lower property taxes than Lyon County. I feel like I have paid all the taxes I can currently afford to pay and am glad the extension proposal was withdrawn until better times.

dale you were not going to be taxed more the mill levy was just going to be moved from one entity to another.
You and I would be better served if we let this pass.
We would also be well served if we watch the school board and their green deal, not just the 1.6 M practice field but the whole deal.

"Government entities need to justify why they need to change using quantitative figures and facts not vague statements and feel good messages."
Oh boy how this statement makes me laugh.

When you posted about this previously you went on some rant about JROTC. What the hell that had to do with this I've no clue.
Anyway I answered you and you either chose to disregard it or haven't been back to see it.
So here it is again only in capital letters.
YOU NOR ANYONE ELSE SHOULD BITCH ABOUT FARMERS,4H, OR EXTENTION AGENTS WITH YOUR MOUTHS FULL OF THE BEST AND CHEAPEST FOOD IN THE WORLD.

I hope the Extension proposal remains dead. I have nothing against the people of Chase Co or the Extension employees, but I also don't want to pay more and more taxes, and set up another taxing authority. I don't believe the Lyon Co. share of the taxes would have been lowered when the deal would have been finished and the tax bills mailed out.
Maybe the Extension agency(s) in Chase Co should consider merging with those in their other neighboring counties.
If Chase Co is interested in further economic development to increase their tax base so they can keep/fund more Gov't services, finance their schools more, etc., how about trying to get some wind farms on their "unspoiled Flint Hills"? The ball is in Chase Co's court to try to get that done. Or maybe Chase Co might approach the BNSF Railway (that already runs through Chase Co) to consider expansion projects there that may not be as well-received in other areas (such as the BNSF project near Gardner, KS).

tbluma,
Good grief, an increase in a tax mil levy, is still an increase in a tax mill levy, no matter where it is moved to !
Even if it is moved, someone will still have to pay increased taxes, no matter whether it is this county or another, someone is going to be hit with a tax increase !
Yes it would make everyone in the City of Emporia and Lyon County very happy to see someone else pay higher taxes, but will it make that someone else happy to have to pay higher taxes, I think not !
Perhaps I am misconstruing what you mean by " dale you were not going to be taxed more the mill levy was just going to be moved from one entity to another." ! What entities do you mean or are referring to !

Methusla, maybe I have a little to much faith in the current co. com.
But if the ext. dist. was formed and got their mill levy, then the one that the co. currently has for that pupose wouldn't have been necessary.
However I agreed that the timing wasn't probably right specifically because this questions and others hadn't been answered.

I would sure as hell rather pay for this than the "green deal"
that it looks like the school boards going to do without us even being able to vote on.
