Americus News

Tuesday, October 13, 2009

Americus Fire Chief Garland Hendrickson and Lyon County Deputy Danny Broyles, along with the assistance of bus driver Larry Kahle, instructed the North Lyon County bus drivers and Americus Elementary School students on the proper procedure for exiting a burning bus.

The demonstration was carried out at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday (Oct. 7) in a bus parked on the south side of the Americus Elementary School yard. The bus drivers went through the exercise at 8:00 a.m.

The children and teachers boarded the bus and listened to the instructions presented by Kahle for evacuating the bus in a calm and timely manner. Hendrickson then told them that a fog would start, fill the bus and cut visibility to zero.  From Kindergarten through Grade 8, the students followed instructions carefully and evacuated the bus in record time. Broyles was stationed at the rear door of the bus to provide assistance, if needed.

Americus Elementary Principal Aron Dody commented that the students were well-behaved, listened to directions, and followed them during the demonstration. He stated that “Everything went great!”

The “bus smoking” also was demonstrated for Admire Elementary School and Reading Elementary School on Thursday and Friday mornings.
