Hornets sweep the Lions

The eight-ranked Emporia State volleyball team rolled to its fifth straight sweep and fifth straight win on Saturday against Missouri Southern.
The Hornets outhit the Lions .421 to .142 on their way to a 25-15, 25-18 and 25-15 win.
In the first set, the Hornets hit .410 and led from the first serve. They took their biggest lead of the match 21-11 and would keep that distance as they rolled to a 25-15 win.
In the second set, ESU fell behind 3-1 and would later trail 8-5. After trading points and trailing 14-11, the Hornets got three straight points off the service of Amy Byfield to take a 16-15 lead. Jenna Snook then served for five straight points to help ESU take the 25-18 victory.
In the third set, the Hornets hit .542 and jumped out to an 11-2 advantage. The Lions would never get any closer than six points as they rolled to a 25-15 win.
Arica Shepard had her second straight double-double with 12 kills and 12 digs with a .381 hitting percentage. It marked the fifth straight match that Shepard has hit over .300.
Brittney Miller had a match-high 15 kills and she hit .600. Ting Liu finished with 44 assists and added four kills on .800 hitting. Amy Byfield continued her streak of double-figure dig matches with 10 and is now within one match of setting the ESU record in that category.
The Hornets improved to 19-2 overall and 6-1 in the MIAA. They moved into second place behind Central Missouri. The Jennies are 9-1 in conference play.
The Hornets will close out a three-match MIAA road trip at Southwest Baptist on Wednesday. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m. from Bolivar, Mo.
