HARVEST FESTIVAL 2009 CANCELLED

Because of the expected cold weather this Saturday morning, the 2nd Annual Harvest Festival activities at the Emporia Farmers' Market have been cancelled.

The Farmer's Market will go on as usual, beginning at 8 am and continuing as long as vendors are able.

Although this week's cold weather has reduced the supply of warm season produce, the fall vegetables such as winter squash, turnips, greens, pumpkins and sweet potatoes, as well as apples, melons, delicious wholesome baked goods, jams, jellies, eggs, honey, and handcrafted items remain abundant.

"You never know what you're going to get in terms of weather at this time of year, so planning for an outdoor fall event is always a bit iffy. We have been blessed with terrific weather at almost every market this season, so I guess we were overdue for something to happen to squash one of our events. This one just happens to be it." said Tracey Graham, Emporia Farmers' Market manager. Casey Woods, Emporia Main Street Director, added "The Harvest Festival is a fun family event, but the weather this year is not conducive to many of the activities planned, including the live music, art demonstrations and games. We will try again next year."

The Farmer's Market will continue on Saturdays at 8 a.m. and Wednesdays at 5 p.m. through the end of October and several special events remain, weather permitting. Each Wednesday there will be Soup Suppers featuring local ingredients, PrairieLand Partners-John Deere is sponsoring a "Winterize Your Mower" demonstration and John Deere BlowerDrawing on Saturday, October 17, and the 2nd Annual Pumpkin Decorating Contest will be held on Saturday, October 31.
