Tons of trash continue to mount in the Emporia Clean Sweep project to dispose of trash, old appliances, tires and other debris that clutters homes and properties.
Since the effort began Sept. 19, each weekend of disposal has brought more and more trash. The first weekend saw 97 tons of waste; Weekend 2 brought 144 tons and last weekend saw 166 tons.
Today and Saturday mark the final two days of the effort to clean up all of Emporia. Roll-off Dumpsters and dump trucks are located from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. both days at Whittier Park at Ninth Avenue and Whittier Street, and in the parking lot at the north end of Emporia State University.
Volunteers have been key to the effort as they are enlisted to sort what is brought in, haul it to the Dumpsters and, in some cases, go to houses to help load items.
So far, nearly 300 volunteers have donated almost 1,500 hours of work.
