After 50 years in business, Dryers Shoe Store, 520 Commercial St., will close its doors within the next couple of months following a liquidation sale.
Sisters Kim Nifong and Kellie Carlson have been running the store for about eight years after their father, Charles Walters, retired. His wife, Edna, who died this past spring, worked at the store alongside Charles Walters.
“My dad and mom both worked here,” Nifong said. “Mom worked here for years with my dad in the store.”
Nifong said many customers at the shoe store have been customers since the store opened.
“Emporia and the surrounding communities has been really good to us,” Nifong said. “... It’s going to be a bittersweet ending.”

I'm going to miss this store. They always had quality merchandise and best of all, great service. Enjoy your retirement, Charlie.

Well, I guess I'll go out of town to buy our shoes now. Brown's is entirely too expensive and I can only get away with cheaper Walmart or Payless shoes for ones that aren't worn frequently...like certain dress shoes. This is very sad news. Thank you Walters family, for all you've brought to this town. Your store will will dearly missed.

Sad news. We buy all our shoes there. Lets all shop Emporia first so no more businesses have to close.
