Lions in Rapids

The Neosho Rapids Lions Club will meet at 7 p.m. Monday at the Community Center. Those who wish to volunteer help with this year’s Haunted House are welcome and encouraged to attend. For more information, call 342-4313.

Many miles

Sports-car fan John Korsak received a special award recently during the 6-Pack Club of America’s national convention in Beach Haven, N.J. The “6-Pack” designation relates to the 6-cylinder engine of the Triumph TR6.

Korsak won the “Longest Distance Driven in a Triumph” award, after he drove his 1974 Triumph TR6 more than 1,300 miles to attend the event, according to Jim Holewka, 6-Pack Trials Festival chairman.

Debate

Emporia High School senior debaters Drew Bonnet and Kathryn Scherich won their second straight varsity championship division tournament on Saturday at Olathe Northwest High School. The tournament featured 49 teams representing 32 schools.  Second year debaters Oscar Lara and Victor Acosta took third in the junior varsity division. EHS won the third-place school sweepstakes trophy as the teams of Araina Nasrazadani and David Harzman and Barabara Haynes and Talia Smith also contributed winning records.

In the past week head debate coach Scott Bonnet learned the Emporia speech and debate program finished the 2008-209 season ranked number 82 in the nation by the National Forensics League, placing it in the top 1 percent of more than 3,000 member schools.

Diabetic health fair

The Flint Hills Community Health Center will be host for the eighth annual Diabetic Health Fair from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at 420 W. 15th Ave. Vendors will have display tables and many door prizes will awarded from sponsoring businesses. L-Cat will will be available to provide free rides to the front door from the Earl Center parking lot which is north of the health center. Barb Rourk of the Emporia Recreation Center will talk about “Resistance Training, Flexibility and Balance for Health”; and Debra Williams, Flint Hills Community Health Center dietician, who will talk about “Fiber, the Whole Story.” The presentation in English will be at 5:40 p.m.; the presentation in Spanish will be at 6:20 p.m. The event is open to the public and free of charge. Americus

city meeting

The Americus City Council meets at 7 p.m. Wednesday at City Hall.

The agenda includes reports; bills to pay; presentation of petitions and filed complaints; a hearing for property at block 68, lots 1-6, unsafe structure; B&G consultants, update on the RWD 1 project; Conley variance for setback requirements for an accessory building; New Breck liquor license renewal; fireboard resignation and appointment.
