The Emporia State women’s basketball team will open the season in the national top 10.
The Lady Hornets were ranked No. 7 in the Division II preseason top 25 released Wednesday. ESU is the only MIAA representative in the top 25 and is the highest-ranked team in the South Central Region.
Emporia State has won back-to-back MIAA championships and has won the league title in seven of the past 12 years. The Hornets return four players who started at least three games on last year’s squad, which advanced to the regional semifinals. First team All-MIAA selection Cassondra Boston and MIAA All-Defensive Team pick Sophia Lenard will be among the Hornets’ key returnees. Boston averaged 14.9 points per game in 2008-09.
