The viewpoint Mark Kolmer has on his Emporia High football career is one that many people have about high school life years down the road — after it’s already gone, and it’s given way to the tedious responsibilities and pressures of adult life.
Many realize only in retrospect how precious their high school experience was to them. Kolmer, perched squarely in the moment as a star running back and a jack-of-all-trades for a 4-1 Spartan team, has that perspective now.
“Well, you only play high school football once,” he says. “Just playing with all these guys, doing the best that I can for all them, really, just gets you out on the field.”
