Emporia State’s Adam McGovern was named MIAA men’s cross country student-athlete of the week on Tuesday.
McGovern placed third at the ESU Invitational with an 8K time of 25 minutes, 36.15 seconds. The sophomore from Lee's Summit, Mo., was the top collegiate finisher and led ESU to its third straight team title at the home meet.
McGovern ran a personal-best time for an 8K despite winds of between 20-40 mph during the race. He became the first person other than Skyler Delmott to lead ESU in a meet in which the Hornets scored as a team since the 2004 South Central Regional.
Emporia State won the team title, defeating MIAA member Northwest Missouri State — ranked ninth in the South Central Region — and Johnson County Community College, the ninth-ranked team in the NJCAA national poll.

For the first time this year, both the Emporia State men's and women's cross country teams have moved into the USTFCCCA Division II South Central Regional Rankings. The men moved up one spot to No. 9, and the women made their debut at No. 9 this week.
