MATFIELD GREEN — When Charles W. Rogler set foot in Chase County in 1859, he left a permanent legacy — a legacy that will be celebrated Saturday at the original site of the Rogler homestead, off of Highway 177 one mile north of Matfield Green.
Rogler left his family in Asch, Austria, when he was 17 years old in 1853. He left to find opportunities in America.
“In 1859, Charles found the land he was looking for in the heart of the Flint Hills and settled on this place which is now known as Pioneer Bluffs,” a pamphlet handed out at Pioneer Bluffs stated. The Rogler homestead sits along the banks of Crocker Creek.
In 1860, Charles Rogler’s family joined him from Austria. Rogler’s father, John and family settled about two miles from Pioneer Bluffs.
“Thus started the influence of the Rogler Family in the Flint Hills and the rest of Kansas,” the pamphlet states.
