Marion Bina, 55, was pronounced dead at the scene of a head-on accident Sunday night near the Saffordville turnoff on West Highway 50 in Chase County.
Bina was driving east in a 1992 Dodge Colt when his vehicle was struck by a one-ton utility truck driven by Scott Beck, 39.
"Mr. Beck was westbound on US 50 at Milepost 335 when he apparently pulled out to pass additional westbound traffic in front of him," said Chase County Sheriff Richard Dorneker. "... When he pulled out to pass, apparently he did not see Mr. Bina. There was a head-on collision at Milepost 335."
Beck was taken to Newman Regional Health in Emporia by Chase County Emergency Medical Sservices. He was treated and later released, Dorneker said.
Beck is believed to be from Alta Vista and was driving a truck licensed in Oklahoma to Beck Brothers Inc. Dorneker said that the investigation into the accident is continuing.
The accident was reported at 9:18 p.m. Sunday, and sheriff's officers arrived on the scene at 9:23 p.m. Dorneker said the accident closed Highway 50 for approximately 45 minutes, and the Kansas Department of Transportation came in to help with traffic control for another 30 to 45 minutes. The highway opened to one lane of traffic for a time, and was cleared and opened to through traffic by midnight.

Dangerous area anyway! Not far from where my grandfather was killed in April 2004.
