Clean sweep collects tons of trash

Tuesday, October 6, 2009

Tons of trash continue to mount in the Emporia Clean Sweep project to dispose of trash, old appliances, tires, and other debris that clutters homes and properties.

Phil Dillon, an organizer and volunteer, reported Monday afternoon that the collection points in Peter Pan and Fremont parks had recorded 167 tons of waste in the two-day clean-up in that area.

The weight was 23 tons more than the 144 tons picked up in Jones Park and at The Earl Center on Sept. 25 and 26, and 70 tons more than the initial Clean Sweep effort, which brought in 97 tons from the far northwest sector on Sept. 18 and 19.

A total of 814,530 pounds of waste has been collected going into the final weekend.

Last week’s breakdown of approximate weights, by tons, was: brush and trees, 11.2 tons; construction and demolition, 47.57; trash, 53.9; iron, 13.2; appliances, 1; tires, 29.9; recyclables, .46; electronic waste, 4.7; and household hazardous waste, 4.92 tons.

Roll-off Dumpsters and dump trucks will be located on Friday and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Whittier Park at Ninth Avenue and Whittier Street, and in the parking lot at the north end of Emporia State University, Dillon said.

Volunteers need to sign up at the Whittier location.

“We never have enough volunteers,” Dillon said.
