There was no surprise in the ESU Invitational women’s race on Friday at Jones Park. Katie Mona dominated the field and won for the second straight year.
But on the men’s side, Adam McGovern did something no other ESU runner has done in the past four years. McGovern beat teammate Skyler Delmott, who had been the top ESU finisher in all 21 races of his collegiate career.
“In a way, it’s really sad, but still it’s really exciting,” Delmott said. “Adam and I ran together the whole race, and I’m really proud of him. As sad as I am that he beat me, I’m really happy for him and I’m glad because it will definitely help our team out. I’m going to be shooting for him now.”
McGovern finished in third place — finishing as the top collegiate runner — Delmott finished in fourth place, and Emporia State won the meet, beating Northwest Missouri by nine points.
