Festival, auction on Main Street calendar

Saturday, October 3, 2009

Emporia Main Street has a busy month ahead with a Harvest Festival, an auction and the giveaway of a riding lawnmower that was donated to the organization.

The first event is the Harvest Festival from 8 a.m. to noon Oct. 10 at the Emporia Farmers Market parking lot, Seventh Avenue and Merchant Street. There will be a variety of activities for the whole family, including art projects at the Art Mobile, merchant booths, food booths, live music, games sponsored by the Emporia Recreation Commission, a barrel train for the kids, pumpkin bowling contest, fresh pressed hot cider, and all the goodies the farmers market has to offer.

For more information or to reserve booth space call 340-6430.

On Oct. 14, Emporia Main Street will have its Eighth Annual Main Street Auction. A social time and silent auction will be from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the Granada Theatre, 807 Commercial St. The live auction will start at 7 p.m.

Before the live auction there will be games, music and hors d’oeuvres. Sports memorabilia, original artwork, parties, tickets and more will be available for bid. For a list of auction items visit www.emporiamainstreet.org.

The auction is open to the public and proceeds are used for the Emporia Main Street Public Improvement Fund.

“Past auction proceeds have purchased Emporia banners, public art, outdoor lighting and have funded other community beautification projects,” said Casey Woods, executive director of Emporia Main Street in a press release.

This year’s proceeds will be used to purchase bike racks for placement throughout Emporia.

Emporia Main Street also will be giving away a riding lawn mower that was donated to Emporia Main Street and the Emporia Farmers Market by PrairieLand Partners. Tickets for a chance to win the mower can be purchased at the Emporia Farmers Market or Emporia Main Street, 12 E. Fifth Ave. Tickets cost $5 each or five for $20. The funds raised will be split between Emporia Main Street and Emporia Farmers Market.

For more information on any of these events call 340-6430.
