Recital

Sharon Campbell, mezzo-soprano, will perform in recital with pianist Yaokun Yang at 7:30 p.m. Saturday in Heath Recital Hall at Beach Music Hall on the ESU campus. This concert is free and open to the public and will feature works by Bononcini, Handel, Berlioz, Larsen and Saint-Saens. Campbell has performed many opera roles, most recently the Third Lady in the Lyric Opera of Kansas City. She is also a 2007 Lotte Lenya Competition finalist. Campbell is a founding member of the concert group, “Pioneer Women,” and has performed with them in Missouri, Kansas and Nebraska. She recently graduated from the University of Kansas with a doctorate and is a member of the faculty at the University of Nebraska-Kearney.

Storytimes

Fall storytimes at the Emporia Public Library are Mother Goose Time, for toddlers to 36 months, 9:45 a.m. every Monday and Thursday; Pat-A-Cake Club, infants to 18 months, 9:15 a.m. every Thursday; and Preschool storytime, children two to five years, 10:30 a.m.

Family Night, “Scampering Squirrels,” will be held from 6:30 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Emporia Public Library. Stories, fun and crafts about scampering squirrels will be shared. On Oct. 13, the theme is “Get Wild in the Aisles.” Stories, fund and crafts about monsters will be shared.

Family afternoon movies will be shown at 4:15 p.m. Oct. 9 and Nov. 13 in the large meeting room at the Emporia Public Library. Patrons of all ages are invited to attend. Children and families may bring their own snacks (no glass containers). Popcorn will be provided. Fall movie flyers are available at the library Children’s Services desk.

Herd at Pioneer Blufffs

Artist Stan Herd will be a special guest Oct. 10 at the Plein Air, Painted Byways event at Pioneer Bluffs near Matfield Green. Plein air painting is done outside in natural light. Artists can arrive at Pioneer Bluffs any time in the morning and paint all day. Herd will visit in the afternoon and talk to artists about their work. At 3 p.m., artwork made during the event will be exhibited in the 1915 barn for public viewing. Reservations are requested, but not required. There also will be games for the young, local food, a bonfire and live music. Herd has created paintings of scenes along the Kansas scenic byways which will be the grand prize in a lottery instant scratch game, stated the news release. Herd may be best known for his earthwork (crop) art. In Emporia, he is also known for the mural, “Springtime in the Flint Hills,” that he created with artist Louis Copt at Sixth Avenue and Merchant Street. Herd’s visit is part of the Painted Byways project.
