ORGANIZERS, VOLUNTEERS AND participants of Emporia Clean Sweep. The free trash dumping events have collected more than 420 tons of trash. There is another Clean Sweep event today and Saturday, plus next weekend. The events run from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
• The newly formed Emporia Symphony Orchestra, which will hold its first performance Oct. 15 at Albert Taylor Hall.
• Dr. Norman Fordyce who retired from private practice as Emporia’s ear, nose and throat doctor. He practiced in Emporia for 18 years.
• Organizers, donors and volunteers who helped build dog houses for the Humane Society of the Flint Hills. The houses were donated to low income and elderly to keep their pets warm during the winter.
• Clint Bowyer who won the NASCAR Nationwide race at Dover.
• Colin Metzger who won the eighth-grade Marion Invitational Cross Country meet. Metzger’s winning time in the two-mile race was 13 minutes and 4 seconds.
• Greg Canales and Hannah Watkins who were named Homecoming King and Queen of Emporia High School.
• R-3 Energy in Cottonwood Falls who started operating a new biodiesel plant. The plant will manufacture fuel out of chicken fat.
• Organizers of the Alzheimer’s Memory Walk. The event will take place 1:30 p.m. Sunday at the Lyon County Fairgrounds. For more information call Paula Sauder at 342-4939.
• Chuck Torres who participated in the Susan G. Koman Race for the Cure in Wichita and raised $1,090 for the cause.
