Sixth-grade students in Emporia are collecting pledges to support their commitment to a healthy drug-free lifestyle.
Students are getting ready for the annual Sixth-Grade Walk to Be Drug-Free on Oct. 9. Students will begin their walk next Friday at approximately 9 a.m. at Welch Stadium at Emporia State University.
The Walk to Be Drug Free is held each year in conjunction with Red Ribbon Week.
Students sign a pledge to be drug-free and collect donations for drug-abuse prevention and education in the community. Students are to collect six donations, walk six miles, and commit to being drug-free for the next six years.
This is the 19th year for the walk, and Lowther North Intermediate School has set a fund-raising goal of $15,000. Sacred Heart sixth-graders also will participate in the project.
“This activity is an important community service project for our students,” said sixth-grade teacher Amy Coffman, one of the event organizers. “A percentage of what they raise is donated to Emporians for Drug Awareness. It is also a primary fundraiser for Lowther North.
“Most importantly this is a great opportunity for parents and community members to support our sixth-graders in their pledge to lead healthy, drug-free lives now and in the future.”
