EHS plays to 0-0 Tie
Friday, October 2, 2009
Emporia High’s soccer team battled to a scoreless tie on Thursday night at Manhattan.
The teams battled evenly through 80 minutes of regulation and two 10-minute overtimes, with both squads getting off six shots on goal but neither able to put a ball in the back of the net.
“It sounds like it (was) a pretty boring game,” Emporia coach Angel Cornejo said. “Actually, no — it was just up and down all the time, and it was pretty exciting, actually.”
Two of the Spartans’ best chances to score came late in the second half. With about 10 minutes remaining, Jared Schaefer intercepted a pass from a Manhattan defender to the goalkeeper, then got off a nice pass to Hector Najera.
“There was no goalie — there was only one defender in the line,” Cornejo said. “And (Najera) kicked that ball right to the defender. And oh my — it’s like 10 minutes left in the game, and well, he missed it.”
A couple of minutes after that, Schaefer got a header off a corner kick, but his shot hit the crossbar and bounced back.
All six of Manhattan’s shots on goal came after the half. Emporia had four of its six shots on goal after the half.
The Spartans are now 6-3-1 on the year, and Manhattan is 7-2-1.
