Short-handed Hornets win again

Saturday, November 28, 2009

With last season’s three leading scorers in street clothes on Saturday, Emporia State put together its most complete performance of the season.

ESU beat Henderson State 80-54, playing its best defensive game of the year and getting balanced scoring from its entire roster.

All eight Hornets who played scored, led by Tim Niles and Dustin Andrews, who both scored 15.

Matt Boswell was one rebound short of a double-double, scoring 11 points and grabbing a game-high nine rebounds.

Taylor Euler was the leading scorer off the bench with 13 points.

The ESU roster was down to eight with starting guards Lamar Wilbern and Jeremiah Box both out with ankle injuries. Robert Moores has yet to play this year with a stress fracture, Jarvis Nichols is out for the season with a torn ACL and Danny McEvoy had to attend a wedding on Saturday.

That didn’t matter as the Hornets improved to 3-2 with the two wins at the SBU Classic.

For complete coverage, check Monday’s Gazette.

Half

Emporia State guard Matt Boswell got his first start of the season, and he’s making the most of it.

Boswell is on his way to a double-double with 11 points and five rebounds in the first half, and the Hornets lead Henderson State 43-24 at half.

Tim Niles has seven points, and Taylor Euler scored six points off the bench. All eight Hornets who have played have scored.

The Hornets have only eight players suited up. Both Lamar Wilbern and Jeremiah Box are sitting out with ankle injuries. Robert Moores has yet to play this season because of a stress fracture in his leg, and Danny McEvoy had to miss the game for a wedding.

The Hornets are shooting 57.7 percent from the field, have made 5-of-9 3-pointers and are 8-of-9 from the free throw line.
