No. 7 Emporia State wasted little time — four seconds, to be exact — before taking control against Arkansas-Fort Smith.
Jamie Augustyn’s two free throws seconds after the opening tip ignited a 15-0 spurt in the first five minutes, and the Lady Hornets cruised past the Lady Lions 88-43 Friday afternoon in the Leggett & Platt Athletic Center in the opening game of the Pizza Hut/Fairfield Inn Thanksgiving Classic.
Augustyn, 5-foot-6 senior guard, popped in a career-high 19 points to pace four Lady Hornets in double figures. Augustyn, whose former best was 16 points, hit 5-of-9 from 3-point range and 4-of-4 free throws. Her trey off a wide-open look from the right wing at the buzzer gave ESU a 49-16 halftime cushion.
“It really helps hitting open players,” Augustyn said. “Our team is really good at finding the open shooters. Our point guards and our other players do a good job trying to find me.”
