Bringing down Mark Kolmer for The Gazette’s area player of the year honor was going to be as difficult as bringing him down on the football field.
Pounding out yard after yard, game in and game out, Kolmer was the driving force behind the Spartans’ resurgent 8-3 season, which didn’t end until the second round of the Class 5A playoffs. The senior fullback’s magnificent year on offense — 1,545 yards rushing and 21 touchdowns — was the top performance of any rusher among The Gazette’s seven area schools and established him as one of the year’s finest backs in Class 5A. Kolmer’s selection as the area player of the year headlines a group of eight EHS representatives on The Gazette’s 2009 All-Area first team.
