A woman accused in the June 17 stabbing death of 26-year-old Ricky Nurnberg of Emporia pleaded no contest to a reduced charge of voluntary manslaughter on Wednesday afternoon in Lyon County District Court.
DeAnna L. Meece, 25, was scheduled to stand trial for intentional second-degree murder on Monday and has been held in the Lyon County Jail in lieu of $250,000 bond.
The hearing Wednesday afternoon, before Fifth District Judge Lee Fowler, originally had been scheduled as the final pre-trial conference in the case.

MEECE PLEADS NO CONTEST TO REDUCED CHARGE
By Chuck Samples/KVOE News
Trial for DeAnna Meece will not take place after all.
On Wednesday, Meece pleaded no contest to a count of voluntary manslaughter in the death of her boyfriend, Ricky Nurnberg. A lengthy trial on a charge of intentional second-degree murder was set to begin Monday.
Meece was charged after allegedly stabbing Nurnberg with an eating utensil during an argument at their apartment on June 17. The couple had a stormy relationship in the six months prior to Nurnberg’s death.
Meece is set for sentencing Jan. 29. She could get five years one month to five years 11 months in prison.

I didn't know either the defendant or the victim in this case so I have no axe to grind. But 5 to 6 years for killing someone.....you can get more than that for selling a relatively small amount of drugs. Seems like a cheap price to pay for a life.

I hear you there Biscuitboy.

I'm SO with you biscuitboy! I don't know the situation. What kind of kitchen utensil was used? If it were a knife wouldn't they have just said that it was a knife? Seems to me like it would be a slow and painful death. I can't believe a sentence of 5 to 6 years is sufficient for robbing someone of their life.

Your right, it.s not enough time but only you & me can change the law. Set down & find out who you need to write, to get things changed. Do this for Ricky & yourself because you never know when this could happen to someone you love..........Ricky's Momma..........

What did she stab him with?

Before I say 5-6 years is not enough, I want to know the circumstances surrounding the event. Perhaps she was defending herself from abuse. In other words, is the Prosecutor OK with the sentence? If so, why??

If she was defending herself from abuse I would think there would have been no charges filed. Since she was originally charged with intentional second degree murder however, which was then pled down to voluntary manslaughter, that tells me the prosecutor believed she had some significant culpability in this act.....as such, I stand by my original statement that five years seems to be a cheap price to pay for a human life.

Seems to me if the prosecutor had a solid case for intentional second degree murder, he would not have pled out the case. My guess is that the case was either week, or he did not think the case was worth the time to take to trial.

In either case then a human life was sold for five years.....pretty cheap in my book!

You all don't know much on it like some of us do and you all don't know the people or the situation that made this come about like some of us do. PLEASE RESPECT famliy and friends of both partys and SHHHHHH!!!! Didn't your mom ever tell you if you don't have something nice to say don't say it at all?

I think this is fair. There was a history of abuse in the relationship. There is a reason why the court agreed. It a horrible thing Ricky lost his life but he had a past with abuse. I knew him and was friends with him but I know he wasn't a saint.

I'm sorry, this is not a far amount of time for a KILLER & that is what she is, face the facts. She pleaded nocontest to the charges & we have wittenss who, she told she did stabe Ricky. 5yrs. of her young life is not long enough for my son lay in the ground. Am I angry, You better believe I angry. The system is letting me done. I already have problems everyday because I no longer have my son with me. But our system is to soft, they want to slap Deanna on the hand for Killing.........BULL....there is nothing worse than taking another persons life How do you think you would feel if this was someone you love or how your mother would feel if this was her child. No one in this lifetime is perfect but we are loved....A person that takes anothers life should be punished & 5yrs. is nothing like it should be...No matter what anyone says, Ricky was MY son & I Loved him with all my heart & I will love & Miss him tell the day GOD takes me where I see him again...........Love Rickys Mooma...........

If the relationship was as abusive as some of you on here claim.......and it may have been....I certainly don't know....but if it was there were other ways out short of taking a life. Did she really try to get away or was it just one of those.....but....but....but....I loooove him......scenarios. If that's what it was then 5 years is not enough.
Posted by biscuitboy (anonymous) on November 30, 2009 at 3:49 a.m. (Suggest removal)
If it was a mutually abusive relationship fueled by an over consumption of alcohol....then ignorance is also no excuse and five years is not enough. You can't take a human life then expect to be excused because you were in a stupid relationship.

My point in asking what he was stabbed with is this: if he was stabbed with something other than a knife I would think that it would have been a slow and painful death. It also would have given the young lady time to snap out of whatever had taken over her and call someone to help him and maybe he wouldn't be dead.
My deepest sympathies go to Ricky's family. And I can't apologize for not having sympathy for the accused.

This is the biggest crock of crap that i have seen yet on the Emporia Judicial system yet. 5 years for cold blooded murder.I know if it would of been someone,as in a man stabbing her to death they would of got life. I have seen child molesters and drug dealers get more time than this. I feel so bad for Rickys mom who i know personally and have all my life and to his other family members that will never get to see him again but get to see her walk out of prison with good time in about 4 years. Ridiculous!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hoss22,
I think child molesters should get life. Definitely more than 5 years. Definitely more than what this chic got. No real comparison between a child molester and a drug dealer (to me).

I apperciate every comment that is made good or bad. People who really knew Ricky, new he was a good person. He truly loved his friends & yes, he loved Deanna, so much he told me he was going to take the heat for the battery charge so she didn't have to go to jail. She didn't stab Ricky once but twice, so you can't tell she didn't KILL him. All I want is to see her pay for murder..........Ricky's Momma...........

I can' t believe that they would let someone who has KILLED someone walk away with a slap on the hand for her to get a second chance in life when Ricky will never walk on earth again, He is watching her act stupid, she will carry a felony charge with the big word MURDER and she will never get a good job ever again in her life she will go crazy. I don't think she even cares what she did to Ricky. Yes she did stab him twice and he was taken from his family and friends and she hasn't had the nerve to say why she did it. He died trying to love her and the family has to suffer. I cry alot cause I lost Ricky he no longer is here with us,he was my baby brother it's hurts to know she knows y and won't tell anyone. He kicked her out the Friday before she killed him and she came and killed him. Why????? I want some closer and answers please help his family out with those words. They both had their problems just like any other young couple, but he didn' t deserve to die!!!! At least she is where she needs to be, please don't let this happen to anyone else.

This shows me that Kansas needs a better justice system for KILLERS, well it's time the community comes together and stands before them and do something about the justice system I know this sounds bad but what if it was your family? Well, you would want some kind of help, Well just so your all aware there is a fund set up in his name at Emporia State Bank, if you would like to make a small donation to help his family funeral costs, they would appreciate it alot and Thank You in advance..

There relationsip was up and down, if he layed a hand on her it's cause she did something to him first. Is past relationship's he has never layed a hand on any other girl you can ask his ex girlfriend of 3 years. Still there is no reason to take away someone's life for any reason what so ever. No one is perfect in any way.

mottster- I can tell you that she will get to talk at her sentencing and yes she is paying the price for what she did but GRANTED it isn't what everyone wants but at leaste they are not letting her out just on probation. He didn't kick her out she left because they had one of there fights again and she left then she went back to get her stuff and tell him it was over when all this went down. YES, DeAnna is upset for what she did. I know! NO, he didn't desrver to die no one does!!!!!!! I feel sorry for the family and friends of Ricky and I pray every nite that you guys are ok. You can't say she always done it first were you there every time they got into it? SORRY for the lose and I pray for you all every nite that you all will be ok!!!!!!!

I'm sorry if Deanna din't mean to Kill Ricky, then tell me why she stabbed him twice. The second stab is to kill. And NO I'll never be alright. She took away my son-my baby & my friend. I have so much hurt everyday......Ricky's Momma...........

Mottster,
You may get the answers you seek at the sentencing or hearing. If I am not mistaken when you plea to a lesser charge, you have to give a detailed account of what transpired. There is a legal term for it, but it escapes my memory, but for a plea bargain to be binding and an admission of guilt to be accepted I am pretty sure that she has to relate the events in her own words. I don't think anyone but the judge can ask questions though.

You are right but I can't think of the name of it either and that is why I said what I said. DeAnna will get to talk!! anurnberg- She will be able to answer your question because I can't!! I know it was not to kill.

This is a group of people who have had family members murdered. They have been spending time to increase victims rights. Criminals have alot of rights and it time victims also have rights. The murder of a friend or relative creates the most intense anger that dosent subside for years. Im going to side with Mott, Deanne will always have trouble finding a decent job with this on her record. Every day she will have to go to a lousy low paying job, working for an unappreciative boss that will be a frustrating life for her. It isnt enough punishment for taking a life, but since the system believes in slapping her on the wrist, at least she will spend the rest of her working years struggling to support herself.
