Hetlinger Developmental Services, 707 S. Commercial St., will launch a capital campaign next year and received $250,000 in tax credits to help with the effort.
The campaign will be to expand the center, which is a provider of services to people with developmental disabilities.
Trudy Hutchinson, executive director of Hetlinger, and Stacey Schafer, communications and public relations assistant, said the expansion will be to the west of the existing center and will include a shipping and receiving area, room for screen printing and room for a greenhouse. The vacated area on the other side of the building will be used to expand the center’s day services, Hutchinson said.
Tax credits will give people an incentive to give to the center. The state issues the credits, and those who donate money will be reimbursed 45 percent of their donation. For example, if a person donates $500, they will be given $225 against their Kansas income tax liability. Normally the reimbursement is 50 percent, but because of the state’s budget crunch, it has been reduced to 45 percent for the 2009 and 2010 years, Hutchinson said.
“This year, $4.1 million of tax credits has been allocated and will be awarded to selected non-profit organizations to offer Kansas tax credits for contributions made to approved projects,” according to www.kansascommerce.com. “Projects eligible for tax credit awards include community service, crime prevention and health care.”
Schafer said those who wish to participate and donate through the tax credits program will need to call Hetlinger at 342-1087 prior to donating to provide information.
The center provides a variety of day services and case management services. Day services include subcontract work for local industries and businesses, employment services and an enrichment program.
