Give thanks

Tuesday, November 24, 2009

Just in time for the Thanksgiving holiday, the news from Gov. Mark Parkinson has gotten worse.

On Monday, the governor announced even more budget cuts to make up for a shortfall that keeps getting worse. The cuts will have far-reaching, possibly devastating effects on everything from education to public services.

That, coupled with an unemployment rate that is worse than it’s been in decades, is sure to cast a pall over a holiday that is meant for reflection and thanks.

That doesn’t mean we have to let the bad news affect the time we will spend with our families this week. In such gloomy times, with revenues dropping and job losses looming, perhaps the best thing we can do is look around and be thankful for what we do have. It’s often in crisis that we turn to each other, and that’s what we should focus on this Thursday.

Be thankful we have families who love and support us.

Be thankful for friends who will always be there for us.

Be thankful we live in a community full of people who bend over backwards to reach out to each other and who give a great deal of time and effort to help those in need.

Be thankful for little things, a long walk on a beautiful evening, a good meal with loved ones, an unexpected letter from an old friend.

Be thankful for each new day and the opportunities it will bring.

Freeze wages, cut benefits, cut expenses, turn out the lights in the empty rooms hallways and bathrooms, install water saving toilets, (only $100.00 at Sam's) lower the thermostats, shut vehicles off instead of letting them idle for hours. This is what private sector businesses do to save money, and it works!
