Support at school

Monday, November 23, 2009

Last week was American Education Week, and everyone should take a moment out of his or her day to thank a teacher.

Educators do not drive to work each day for the extravagant paycheck; rather, they understand the true value of watching a student succeed. I know that my past 12 years of public education have taught me so much more than reading and writing. I have learned discipline, respect, and social skills that will stay with me for the rest of my life.

Emporia High School has one of the most supportive and involved faculties of any school. Each morning as I walk into those academic halls, I am greeted with a “good morning” from the secretaries and principals who make it a point to make students feel welcomed and encouraged. The faculty does more than teach; they give their students support, guidance, and role models to look up to. Even the lunch ladies have school spirit and will often cook special treats in support of our sports teams.

Although they are not responsible for teaching, the custodians also have a significant role in the lives of the students. For example, Teddy Kiesler has graciously offered to help out with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. The entire faculty at Emporia High makes a positive impression on the students, and without them, my peers and I would never be able to achieve our goals.  So, next time you see a teacher, stop and say “thank you.”
