Olpe students again dominated the annual Learning Quest Essay Contest operated through the office of Kansas State Treasurer Dennis McKinney.
McKinney was at Olpe Elementary Junior-Senior High on Thursday afternoon to present awards for first place to eighth-grader Kayleb Allen and seventh-grader Bo Krueger for the essays they submitted to the contest. Both are students of English teacher Michelle Barnhart.
Each student won a $1,000 Learning Quest education savings account, plus pizza parties for their classrooms.
“The odds are against us,” Barnhart said, acknowledging her pleasure in the students’ success. “We are a small school. We don’t send as many entries.”
More than 1,500 entries were received from 70 schools across Kansas.
