Picking a favorite moment from Emporia High’s 2009 football season might be difficult for many. There were so many good ones to sift through, from the Spartans’ first win over Hayden since 1996, to either of the close district wins over the two Salina schools, to the comeback from a 20-0 deficit against McPherson to record Emporia’s first playoff victory since 1990.
For coach Bill Lowe, the choice for his favorite moment comes fairly quickly when you ask him: beating Salina Central 32-28 on Oct. 23 at EHS.
“That was the first time that, as a coach, I’d ever beaten Salina Central, and that was a big win, just to know that we were in the playoffs — winning that game got us in the playoffs,” he said. “And then, you can’t ever take away from the McPherson game, because that was a huge high. But the first big high was probably that Salina Central game.”
An 8-3 EHS squad that featured fine offensive line work, one of the state’s most productive running backs in Mark Kolmer and an opportunistic defense will be remembered as a team that surprised, if not shocked, many observers with how good they were.
With some help from Lowe, here’s a look back, unit by unit, at how the season unfolded.
