Former Emporia Fire Capt. Jack Schoeck is back doing what he loves best: firefighting.
This time, instead of battling house fires, Schoeck expects to be putting out fires at NASCAR tracks around the country.
Schoeck, now 68, retired from the Emporia Fire Department about 16 years ago. He’d owned and operated a Kawasaki motorcycle dealership and repair shop for many years, and now works as a mechanic and bus driver for the Emporia school district’s transportation department.

The networking among strangers that brought about his return to firefighting seemed almost fated to happen, and the fun he had on his first outing to Texas Motor Speedway last weekend was evidence that he’d made the right decision.
“It was a blast. And then to get back into firefighting!” Schoeck beamed at the thought.
