Chili supper for Ortega
A Chili Feed is being held from 4 to 7 p.m. today at the First United Methodist Church, 823 Merchant St. for the benefit of Addie Ortega, 5, who was diagnosed with acute lymphocytic leukemia. Along with chili, there will be beef-vegetable soup, cinnamon rolls, corn bread, dessert, tea, water and coffee. Carryout is available. There also will be prizes. Harvest Home Festival
Messiah Lutheran Church will have the 13th annual Harvest Home Festival and Benefit Auction, beginning at 8 a.m. Saturday in the Anderson Building at the Lyon County fairgrounds. This year, a portion of the proceeds will be given to Camp Alexander.
This festival features many specialty booths, including the popular jelly cupboard with more than 5,000 items including homemade jellies, jams, pie fillings, salsa, fruit, pickled goods and spice mixtures. Other specialty booths include the Christmas Corner and the Bakery which specializes in crafts, homemade candy and baked goods. The Flea Market features a wide variety of items. Gift wrapping will be available for any purchase.
The auction of glassware, antiques, household goods, large amounts of furniture and other items begins at 10 a.m. At 1 p.m., autographed sports memorabilia will be auctioned. The memorabilia includes autographed items from major league baseball, college sports, the NFL, NASCAR and the NBA along with many others.
A biscuit and sausage gravy breakfast will be served beginning at 8 a.m. Lunch begins at 11:30 and will feature smoked pork sandwiches, chili, Polish sausage, Frito chili pie, beverages and an assortment of pies and desserts.
The celebration concludes Sunday with a 10:30 a.m. worship and meal at the Messiah Lutheran Church, 1101 Neosho St., which is open to the public. For more information, call the church at 342-8181.
Turkey and ham in Olpe
The Olpe United Methodist Church will serve turkey and dressing, ham, potato casserole, cakes and pies and other foods, along with coffee, tea and fruit beverages from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Saturday. This dinner will be free, “in appreciation for all our faithful and generous contributors and God’s blessings to us,” said the Rev. Lucille Barb in a press release. This dinner is also a thank-you to all who helped with the new addition to the church. For more information, call (620) 475-3863.
Bingo and soup
St. Joseph Catholic Church “Thankful Hearts” Craft Bingo and Soup Supper will be held Sunday at the church in Olpe. Supper will be served beginning at 4:30 p.m. The menu features chili, potato soup, ham and turkey sandwiches, crackers, relishes, desserts, coffee and tea. Free will donations will be accepted. Bingo will begin at 6:30 p.m. There also will be prizes.
Thanksgiving dinner
The Emporia Church of Christ at the corner of Twelfth Avenue and Neosho Street will have the annual free Community Thanksgiving Meal from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thanksgiving Day. They will serve the traditional holiday meal. No donations will be asked or expected. Meals will be delivered to those who cannot come to the church.
