Holocaust survivor to speak

Tuesday, November 17, 2009

Tickets are still available for an event Monday that will feature Holocaust survivor Nesse Godin.

SOS will sponsor the talk by Godin, a survivor of the Shauliai, Lithuania Ghetto, the Stutthof Concentration Camp, four labor camps and a death march, according to the press release.

“She has dedicated her adult life to teaching and sharing memories of the Holocaust,” the press release stated. “Nesse has the ability to translate the Holocaust into a personal glimpse of this enormous and horrifying drama.”

Godin volunteers at the United States Holocaust Museum.

“I was a prisoner from the age of 13 to 17. I lived through a ghetto, concentration camp, four labor camps and a death march. I was not strong, I was not smart. I was a little girl,” she said in explaining why she volunteers. “I think that I survived that Holocaust by the grace of the Lord above and by the kindness of Jewish women that gave me a bite of bread, wrapped my body in straw to keep me warm, held me up when I was hurt by the guards, gave me hope but also asked me to promise them that if I survived I would not let them be forgotten.”

SOS is working to raise awareness of issues of abuse and survival and to raise funds for its New Beginning Fund, which supports victims’ services. Godin will speak at 7 p.m. Monday at the Emporia High School Auditorium. Tickets for the program cost $15 each and will be on sale at the Granada Coffee Co., Credit Union of Emporia and SOS administrative offices in the lower level of CoreFirst Bank & Trust, 701 Merchant St.

“We want to focus on education and prevention of abuse, in addition to serving as a crisis organization,” said Diane Jensen, SOS board of directors’ chairperson. “Nesse’s story of the abuse she and countless others suffered in the Holocaust is horrifying and her story of survival is inspirational.”
