Those wanting to quit smoking are invited to participate in the Great American Smokeout on Thursday.
The American Cancer Society is hosting the 34th Great American Smokeout. Local sponsors include the Flint Hills Community Health Center and Jimmy Johns. The “Cold Turkey event” will be from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the health center, 420 W. 15th Ave. The event is come and go.
“The idea is that if someone can quit for a day, they can quit for a lifetime,” the press release stated.
The Great American Smokeout was started in 1976 to inspire and encourage smokers to quit for a day.
“More than half of the 376,187 Kansans who smoke have attempted to quit for at least one day in the previous year, and the Great American Smokeout remains an opportunity to encourage people to commit to making a long-term plan to quit for good,” the press release stated.
Free counseling and support is available through the Flint Hills Community Health Center via telemedicine or telephone. Participants can pick up an informational packet on Thursday as well as a “cold turkey” snack from Jimmy Johns.
Kansans also can receive one-on-one support from the Kansas Tobacco Quitline at 1-800-QUIT-NOW.

Fantastic!!! Congratulations to the Kansas Tobacco Quitline for supporting the thousands of cold turkey quitters that pharmaceutical industry financial influence demands be ignored. You are the only state in years to declare the insanity of a national cessation policy that says either purchase and use quitting medicines or we cannot help you.
As editor of WhyQuit, the Internet's oldest and largest cold turkey quitting forum, I speak for our entire team in stating that we admire the courage Kansas is showing. Please feel free to use as little or as much of our materials as you desire, including our two free cold turkey quitting books and our 69 video quitting lessons.
